There are many hikes to enjoy in Metro Vancouver, but few include kayaking in the itinerary.
And, while many include rushing, beautiful waters, they simply don’t compare to the majesty of Widgeon Falls.
Indeed, these tempestuous rapids are spell-binding to behold. Located in Pitt Meadows, a lush forest frames the rapids as they crash and propel their way down a towering staircase of rock.
The hike’s beginning involves a kayak ride through the peaceful marshland. While visitors are welcome to bring their own kayak, they may opt to rent one from the Ayla Canoe rental shop. They rent for under $50 for a day; however, this cost can be split between two hikers sharing the tiny vessel.

To begin, hikers paddle across Pitt Lake en route to Widgeon Slough. Pitt Lake is the second-largest lake in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. In addition, it is one of few tidal lakes in the entire world
Here, kayakers will paddle for about half an hour, and are privy to a litany of wildlife. Specifically, they can spot ducks, herons, deer, and even bears on the shore.

From Kayaker to Hiker
After completing the aquatic component, hikers can continue past a campsite to a fork in the road. From here, they will quickly spot a sign reading ‘Widgeon Falls’. From there, the hike is relatively easy.
After a while, hikers will reach the lower falls, which are perfect for summer dips. Next, a shorter, 10 minute trek upwards takes them to the higher falls.
Of course, people must return back to their kayaks in order to paddle back. The hike takes 5 hours round trip, and they must return kayaks by 5 pm.
