Because nothing says Vancouver is a city full of culture like putting up locks on fences to show your partner that you really want it to last forever.
Love locks are sprouting up in the lower mainland, first sighted on the Burrard Bridge last year on Valentine’s Day, and have been spotted again along Northeast False Creek last week. The longevity of love locks have not lasted beyond the time span of a summer fling due to the city’s speedy removal process, taking down the signs of romantic devotion out of bridge safety concerns.
To councillor George Affleck, the city of Vancouver are overreacting with their first response, believing instead that the love locks should have a designated place to exist without being chopped off the next day.
Coun. Affleck has put forward a motion to ask the city of Vancouver to find a home for the padlocks because the quirky symbols of public displays of affection are things that counteract the notion of Vancouver as a no-fun city.
Coun. Affleck also has said that the love locks could be a tourist attraction like the ones attached to the Seine Bridge in Paris.
