Some unfortunate news has just been announced by the B.C. government in regards to potential electric vehicle buyers. For those of you who have been looking into getting an electric vehicle because of the EV rebate, it might be time to rethink that decision.
You might not be getting that rebate for some time.
THE BATTERY’S DEAD
In an announcement released on April 29, the B.C. government reported that its emissions targets would fail to reach their 2030 targets. B.C.’s carbon pollution is expected to drop to 20% below 2007 levels by 2030, which is far lower than their goal of 40% carbon reduction that the government was committed to.

During the same day this announcement was released, the province noted that they would be pausing its EV rebates so that it may “consider next steps.”
This program, called B.C.’s Go Electric Passenger Vehicle Rebate Program, hands out rebates up to $4,000 to electric car purchasers. The actual rebate amount is dependent on what your personal income is. Additionally, what kind of electric vehicle you have purchased is also factored into your rebate amount.
RECHARGING THE REBATE
No longer will people be able to receive these rebates, at least for the foreseeable future. Plenty of industry experts have added their two cents on the issue. They have noted that removing these rebates could cause sales in this fairly new industry to collapse.

The B.C. government plans to take a step back to review what the program’s future may be. All we know for sure is that the EV rebates are on pause– not cancelled. Clean Energy Canada’s Evan Pivnick has stated that, “we must not walk away from a technology that offers a very real, permanent affordability solution for many B.C. families.”
Currently, the EV rebate program is in effect until May 15, 2025. As long as you purchase or lease a vehicle before then, you can still receive your rebate.
After that, though? It might be time to get a bike instead.
