The Riptide; Vancouver’s Other Professional Sports Team

Vancouver Riptide - Ultimate Disc League

Long gone are the city’s basketball team, women’s soccer team and lingerie football team. On the ice we have the Vancouver Canucks (NHL), Vancouver Giants (WHL) and Abbotsford Heat (AHL). On the field we have lacrosse – Vancouver Stealth, Canadian football – BC Lions, and Major League Soccer – Vancouver Whitecaps.

But Vancouver has another professional sports team you may not be aware of. The Vancouver Riptide play in the Western Division of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL).

The professional ultimate frisbee team consists of 30 young players from metro Vancouver and calls the Swangard Stadium in Burnaby their home.

They are currently near the end of their third season and sit in third place of the West Division.

The West Division of the AUDL consists of:

  • Los Angeles Aviators
  • San Diego Growlers
  • San Francisco FlameThowers
  • San Jose Spiders
  • Seattle Cascades
  • Vancouver Riptide

Currently, the East Division has another 6 teams while the Mid-West and South Divisions each house 7 teams.

San Jose has won the last two championships and Toronto won in 2013.

The Riptide begin the home stretch of their 2016 season with a 6-5 record and in a tight battle for the final playoff spot with the LA Aviators. Los Angeles will be the visitors for Vancouver’s final home game of the season on June 25th at 6 p.m. at Swangard Stadium.
