The much anticipated Evergreen SkyTrain Line could be unveiled sooner than you think.

At a council meeting on September 13, 2016, members discussed the potential opening date of TransLink’s 11-kilometre extension.

At the 1:50 mark in the video linked above, Port Moody Mayor, Mike Clay, said in regards to the opening date being pulled forward, “Go ahead and quote me, November the 20th, [the SkyTrain will be] gliding into Port Moody”.

Mayor Clay went on to say that the trains are in end-to-end testing and have already been operating throughout the extension areas.

It’s now up to TransLink to “finish up” the line through testing and fixing any deficiencies before the above date.

The Mayor discussed some of the details in respect to how the transit line is coming along, including progress with Transit Police training, security facilities that will be available, third-party washrooms at the stations (not available on the opening day but in the work plan), and vendor services.

Mayor Clay says council was surprised with the government’s announcement of the date advancement, but assures that everyone in the Tricities will be ready for the November 20th open.

TransLink feels very positive about the opening date, with the Mayor confirming that he thinks the end of November looks promising.

UPDATE: Translink has not confirmed Mayor Clay’s comment and has followed up to this story with a statement:

“TransLink is still working toward the time period set by the Province for service before Christmas. Right now we are working hard behind the scenes to get ready for day one.”

Mayor Clay has also followed up and states that his quoted date is a guess.
