Affected Humans

Salmonella has the potential to spread to humans after handling contaminated pet products. This is especially so for those who do not wash their hands after having contact with their pet’s food, as well as pets that have been in contact with contaminated products. If you believe you have been exposed to Salmonella, you are advised to monitor yourself for some or all of the following symptoms.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Fever

Salmonella has the rare chance to result in more serious ailments. This includes “arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.” Those experiencing the aforementioned symptoms after handling the contaminated pet products are advised to contact their healthcare provider.

Affected Pets

Pets can also be infected by Salmonella. Symptoms of infected pets may include “vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, fever, or excessive salivation.”

If you believe your pet has been infected by the contaminated pet products, you are advised to contact your veterinarian. Moreover, “some pets may not appear sick but can spread infection to other animals and humans in the household.”
