On April 30th, Port Moody unveiled the city’s new rainbow crosswalk.

Located in the 200-block of Newport Drive, this new rainbow crosswalk shows the diversity Port Moody wants to be known for.

“The rainbow crosswalk is a symbol of pride and acceptance for the LGBTQ2+ community,” said Acting Mayor Meghan Lahti.

“It’s also a symbol of diversity and the strength we gain when we all stand together and support each other”.

Furthermore, the new crosswalk is part of a larger project – the Newport Drive Crosswalks Improvement Project. The project includes curb extensions with raised crosswalks along Newport Drive between Ioco Road and Ungless Way.

This project was completed to “improve traffic safety and accessibility for all road users through shortened crossing distances, improved visibility for pedestrians, traffic calming, and improved sight lines for drivers and cyclists”.

The total project cost was $337,000. The rainbow crosswalk cost $13,000 to install. In addition, TransLink contributed $40,000 to the Newport Drive Crosswalks Improvement Project.
