Metro Vancouver may have enjoyed a hot summer, but things are looking like they may get quite cold this winter. In addition, health care officials warn this year’s flu-season could be particularly bad.

The Southern Hemisphere just experienced their worst flu season to date. Now, scientists warn that the outbreak is headed to North America.

Global News spoke to Dr. Andy Simor at the department of microbiology and infectious disease who mentioned, “This past flu season in Australia was much more severe than usual. They had more than double the number of cases compared to the previous year.”

He added that there has also been a significant rise in influenza-related deaths in Australia. With that in mind, precautions should be taken against the strain.

Metro Vancouver Flu Season

Flu season in Metro Vancouver usually commences around November and runs until April, but the exact timing is unpredictable. While cases have not been reported on the west coast yet, Ontario is already treating cases of the flu.

People over 65 years of age, children, and those with health problems could face severe complications from the flu such as pneumonia and even death.

Health officials advise that people get a flu shot, thoroughly wash their hands, sneeze into their arms, and stay home if they are sick.
