Love Locks Pop Up At New West Pier Park

Love Locks New West Pier Park

Just before Valentine’s Day, love locks popped up in New Westminster’s Pier Park and the phenomenon is growing rapidly by the day.

Love locks (also known as love padlocks) are a custom by which padlocks are affixed to a fence, gate, bridge or similar public fixture by sweethearts at an increasing number of locations in the world to symbolize their everlasting love. The tradition began in Paris when couples would “lock” their padlocks onto a bridge & photograph one another in front of their locks, and videotape the throwing of the keys into the water beneath the bridge.

Many will also remember love locks made their debut in Vancouver back in 2013 on Burrard St. Bridge. The act of love was immensely popular until the City of Vancouver began cutting off all the locks. Just under a year ago, Vancouver Councillor George Affleck put forward a motion to ask the City of Vancouver to find a home for the love locks in hopes of bringing culture to the city. The motion was not approved.

It will be interesting to see how the city of New Westminster reacts to the new love locks at Pier Park.

We’re crossing our fingers they’ll be open to the idea.
