B.C. Premier John Horgan has said his government will pass legislation by the end of this month to allow ridesharing companies to operate within our province.

“We’ll be passing it before the House rises and then we’ll go into the significant changes to our insurance packages” said Horgan on Tuesday.

“Within the next two weeks it will be introduced and I expect that with the amount of support that we have in the legislature that it will be passed.”

Ridesharing Challenges In BC

Ridesharing legislation could be passed by the end of 2018, but don’t expect to see Uber and Lyft on the roads until Fall 2019.

As mentioned above, Horgan said the government will have to review their insurance packages and also have interested drivers undergo criminal record checks.

“We want to make sure that the playing field is level for those who are already in the sector and those new entrants”.

The Premier also understands what a huge undertaking this is.

“A lot of work to do, but we’re confident that we’re well on our way, and the legislation will set the table for that into the new year” said John Horgan.

The minister of transportation and infrastructure, Todd Stone, has ensured the Vancouver Taxi Association and the community that when Uber does arrive in Vancouver, there will be several measures taken to ensure equality between the two companies. Safety for both passengers and vehicles are the government’s primary concern.
