Nikkei Matsuri, the authentic Japanese culture festival, returns to Burnaby this Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, August 30 & Sunday, August 31, from 11:00am to 7:00pm daily. Join us as we celebrate a special milestone: the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre’s 25th anniversary!

Get ready to dive into a vibrant experience that brings Japan to Metro Vancouver:

  • Witness Unique Traditions: Experience the energetic Mikoshi procession and join in the Bon Odori dance around the festival’s Yagura tower. Want to dress the part? Yukata (summer kimono) rentals will be available!
  • Captivating Stage Performances: Be entertained by local talent including dynamic taiko drumming, a thrilling samurai show, traditional Japanese dance, pop music from an idol unit, and impressive martial arts demonstrations.
  • Special International Guests: Don’t miss WA Studio KIWA from Japan, showcasing their unique “1000 wishes” art dress in a special stage performance.
  • Endless Family Fun: Kids (and adults!) will love the festival games like yo-yo balloon fishing and super ball scooping. Plus, get creative with hands-on origami, watercolour calligraphy, face painting, and relax in the Intergenerational Lounge.
  • Savour Authentic Flavours: Satisfy your cravings with a huge selection of delicious Japanese festival foods from Yatai street food stalls, food trucks, and the Nikkei Cafe. Adults can also unwind in the Beer & Sake Garden.
  • Unique Shopping & Discoveries: Explore the new Japanese Pop Culture Market, a Japanese flea market, artisan vendors, the Museum Shop, and the Japanese Bookstore for one-of-a-kind finds.
  • Explore Art & History: Dive deeper into Japanese Canadian heritage with engaging museum exhibits and archives.

This incredible festival is a cornerstone of the NNMCC’s mission to honour, preserve, and share Japanese Canadian history and culture. Your attendance supports their vital community programs, educational outreach, archives, and exhibits.
