After a long, drawn out affair, the municipality of Delta has finally been designated the status of “city.”
The official process began back in May, when council first submitted a formal request to change its title from “corporation” to “city”, but there has been talk of changing the title for many years.

Delta Optimist reports that there was a further push to change the municipality’s title this year when, “a civic delegation to Rotterdam, Netherlands found having “corporation” in Delta’s official name created a mistaken assumption the municipality was a private business. The Same problem occurred during a visit to Ottawa.”

Opposition to Delta as a “City”
The residents of Delta could have blocked the change by registering an opposition vote, and many did; however, a clear opposition of over ten percent of eligible voters was needed to prevent the change.
The number of opposition votes needed was 6,993 and only 1,506 were submitted. From these opposition ballots 1,450 came from South Delta, and only 56 came from North Delta.
Museum staff are preparing a display with Delta’s history thus far to mark the occasion. It will be displayed in recreation centres and civic facilities.
