While there is no St. Patrick’s Day Parade taking place in Vancouver this year, there are plenty of events to check out. On March 17th, we toast to Ireland’s biggest national holiday where we, like everyone else around the globe, celebrate by merrily imbibing social to heavy amounts of alcohol drink. Depending on your mood or how much of a keener you are, there are plenty of activities to participate in as you tip your hat to the patron saint of Ireland.
Here are the top five ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Vancouver.
CelticFest Vancouver | March 10th-18th
If you’re in the mood for history, CelticFest Vancouver is the largest annual Celtic celebration in western Canada, and it starts this Friday from March 10th – 18th. Promoting local and international Celtic music, dance, cuisine and sports, there is a full line-up of events of things to do and see. One of the highlights is the Celtic Village and street market that takes place in Robson Square and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
St. Patrick’s Day 5k Run | March 18th
As a partner of CelticFest Vancouver, the BMO St. Patrick’s Day 5k is a perfect culmination to the weeklong festivities. A scenic run through Stanley Park sounds like just the thing to kick off the weekend right. Participants are encouraged to dress up with the best St. Paddy’s Day costume. If you are in Burnaby or in the mood for a 7 miler, there is the Green Sock Half and Shamrock’n Race happening in Burnaby Lake Regional Park as well.
Lucky March Market | March 17th- 18th
Hosted at the Lonsdale Quay Market in North Vancouver, this is one local market where you might run into a leprechaun or two. To start festivities, the Cheshire Cheese Restaurant will kick off the Market with an annual dinner on the 17th with entertainments from Celtic dancers and live musicians. The day after, the Lonsdale Artisan Farmers’ Market will feature samples from Sharky’s Irish Stew and Green Leaf Brewing just in time for St. Patrick’s Day from 12:30pm – 1:30 pm.
Go on a Irish Pub Crawl
Nothing like going on a pub crawl on the day we celebrate a culture known for heavy drinking. Whether you decide to buy tickets for a pub crawl or go on an adventure of your choice, Vancouver has tons of Irish-themed bars downtown. We’ve rounded up the best Irish bars in the YVR here.
Dine at Forkhill Irish Bistro
Maybe you’re the type who’d prefer to celebrate over a delicious dish in a laidback environment. If you are, there’s a new Irish bistro in town with a menu that includes Yorkshire pudding, chips and pork pie. With the recent cold weather we’ve been experiencing, pub grub is one way to stave off any hunger cravings.
