B.C. teachers aren’t the only ones contemplating a walkout. A group of Vancouver students at Windermere high school has called for a mass student walkout, followed by a gathering at the Vancouver Art Gallery, on Friday afternoon.
The group posted the event on Facebook, and by Wednesday morning nearly 12,000 students had signed up to take part, the result of frustration that many students are feeling, according to the protest organizers.
“We didn’t think it would be successful at first but we got 100 people attending in the first 15 minutes on Facebook, and we just kept spreading it around,” student Nicole Yu said.
Students are being told not to see the walkout as simply a chance to skip class but rather as an opportunity to send a message to the government and teachers.
“Whatever affects our teachers affects us because it affects our education and our learning and our school experience and our high school experience,” said student Navi Rai.
