Finally, the highly anticipated release of Apple’s newest iPhone is here!
What is being called officially the iPhone 5, will be available for purchase on September 21. You can even pre-order as early as this Friday, September 14.
You’re probably wondering, what’s the difference between this iPhone and previous models, such as the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S. Below are a few key points to know about the iPhone 5!
1. It’s called the iPhone 5
Apple decided to call it’s sixth generation of iPhone, the iPhone 5. They chose not to call it the new iPhone, similarly how they called the third generation iPad, “the new iPad.” Apple proudly announced they have sold 400 million iOS devices, and 84 million iPad’s!
2. iPhone 5 screen
The iPhone 5’s screen is increasing from the tradition 3.5″ screen to a slightly larger 4″ screen. This screen will be able to fit a fifth row of icons on the home screen. iPhone 5’s screen also has a higher resolution of 1,136 by 640 pixels and a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. The screen itself is also thinner!
3. Size, Weight & Colour
The iPhone 5 will be 20% lighter and 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S. Though it may look similar, there are a few differences. For one, the headphone jack will be located on the bottom of the phone near the speakers, instead of at the top near the sleep/power button. The FaceTime camera has also been moved from the left of the earpiece speaker to on top of the earpiece speaker. Colour wise, Apple has stuck to it’s traditional white and black, with some slight changes. The back’s of the iPhone 5 feature an aluminum body, which is slate on black, and silver on white.
4. iPhone 5 processor
iPhone 5’s processor is Apple’s new A6 processor, which has twice the CPU speed, along with twice the graphics power, all while being smaller and more battery friendly. Apple claims battery life is better on the iPhone 5 than the 4S due to the change in processors.
5. Cameras
The camera will be smaller, but still features 8 megapixels. As mentioned above, the FaceTime camera has sightly moved on the front plate of the iPhone. Also, a new feature is that the iPhone 5 will be able to take panorama photos, and produce a 28MP image, all while being able to take photos while shooting video.
6. 4G & iOS 6
iPhone 5 will be a 4G network, and will feature iOS 6. iOS 6 isn’t only available for iPhone 5 but will be available for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. iOS 6 is the next generation of Apple’s mobile operating system, and includes many cool new features, such as a new map app! Also, you won’t need WiFi connection to make FaceTime calls anymore, your data connection will now work too! iOS 6 will be available on September 19.
7. New Lightening Dock Connector
The new 8-signal dock connected is called Lightening, which is 80% smaller than the tradition 30 pin type of dock.
8. Pricing & Other Specs
iPhone 5 will also feature brand new headphones which come with a remote, all while being priced starting at $199 US for 16 GB with a contract, $299 US for 32 GB with a contract and $399 US for 64 GB.
