As Metro Vancouver gas prices set a North American high, Langley thieves are finding ways to save on fuel.
Now, Langley RCMP have seen a surge in the number of thieves drilling into gas tanks and siphoning out fuel.
The thieves generally target trucks, SUVS, or other vehicles with larger capacity gas tanks.
What’s more, cordless drills are portable and therefore make the ordeal rather easy. Further, modern, plastic gas tanks provide the ideal drilling surface – there’s no risk of sparks.

Sadly, replacing a gas tank, especially on larger vehicles, may cost thousands of dollars. Worse, some insurance companies requires drivers to pay a deductible before coverage kicks in. Often, the deductible alone costs hundreds of dollars.
On Sunday, April 29th, gas prices in the region reached as high as 1.619 per litre, setting an all time record for the continent. On Monday, April 30th, some stations were still showing the staggering number.
As the numbers continue to rise, so do the number of the incidents.
If prices weren’t already high enough, they could get much worse. If Alberta follows through on its threat to block the shipment of oil to BC, prices could soar to $2 per litre.
