The numbers are in, and four B.C. universities have been ranked among the best in Canada.
The list comes from Maclean’s 2027 Canadian University Rankings, which spotlights universities through a variety of evaluations in order to determine which schools are the best in the country.

How Are the Rankings Determined?
Maclean’s uses a number of performance indicators to evaluate universities, and they’ve introduced four new ones this year. This includes:
- Retention rate: The percentage of students who continue at their university into their second year
- Graduation rate: The percentage of students who graduate within six years
- Research volume: Research output per faculty member
- Research impact: The proportion of research output among the top 10 per cent most-cited publications in comparable fields
Some existing indicators are scholarships and bursaries, student services, faculty awards, and research funding. There are a total of 15 indicators used to assess universities across four areas: student resources and support, student experience and success, faculty quality, and reputation.
The Top 3
There are three categories of universities, according to Maclean’s rankings. This is large (30,000+ students), mid-size (10,000 – 30,000 students), and small (less than 10,000 students) universities.
Here’s who made the top 3 in each category:
Large Universities
- McGill University — Quebec
- University of Toronto — Ontario
- University of British Columbia — British Columbia
Mid-Size Universities
- Simon Fraser University — British Columbia
- University of Victoria — British Columbia
- Dalhousie University — Nova Scotia
Small Universities
- Mount Allison University — New Brunswick
- University of Northern British Columbia — British Columbia
- St. Francis Xavier University — Nova Scotia
Across all categories, B.C. made it onto them at least once. Across UBC, SFU, UVIC, and UNBC, it’s clear that B.C. is near the top of Canada’s post-secondary education providers.
