But being in the great outdoors comes with the chance of bumping into wildlife. Squamish Access Society (SAS) has recently issued a bear alert for those who might be hitting the trails soon.
Bear Alert in Squamish
According to the District of Squamish, Squamish is located in prime bear habitat.
Recently, a grizzly bear with cubs was spotted near the Paradise Valley climbing area. SAS noted in an Instagram post, “bear activity is high across local sectors,” and that everyone should “pay close attention to local signage and follow any active trail or crag closures in Paradise Valley.”

They also described a list of safety protocols that hikers and climbers should keep in mind:
- Follow Local Signage: Respect all posted trail closures, warnings, and signage at trailheads. They are in place to keep everyone safe and minimize human-wildlife conflict.
- Pack It Out: Never leave food waste, apple cores, or wrappers at the crag or along trails.
- Leash Dogs: Keep dogs on a leash at all times. Off-leash dogs can easily provoke or startle a bear.
- Make Noise: Talk loudly or call out while hiking, especially near running water or dense brush.
- Carry Bear Spray: Ensure your spray is easily accessible on your hip or harness, not packed away inside your bag.
- Stay vigilant, follow local warnings, and give wildlife the space they need.

Bears are active from March to December, although conflict encounters are reportedly rare. Moreover, you are asked to report any high-risk wildlife encounters or conflict to the Conservation Officer.
