Wildfire season is upon us, and it’s closer than ever now.

Discovered on Wednesday, July 2, this new wildfire is currently out of control with its cause suspected as by humans.

SPREADING FIRE

The British Columbia Wildfire Service (BCWS) website estimates that the fire is currently at 0.6 hectares, as of July 3. It is located at Serpent’s Back Trail in Hope.

Hope, which is located approximately two hours from Vancouver, is noted as being a “moderate” risk for wildfires.

On a Facebook post from Hope Fire Department, they said that “at 11:28pm last night, Hope Fire responded to reports of a wildfire in the Silver Creek area. The BC wildfire service (BCWS) supported our response and remained on scene until 4 AM this morning. A BCWS crew will also support today and they have a medium bucket dropping water on the fire.”

FIREFIGHTING

A BCWS Unit Crew is currently on scene to support the Hope firefighters, along with an active helicopter dropping water buckets.

Although the fire is noted as 0.6 hectares, it is also classified as “Out of Control”. Defined by the BCWS website, that means it is “a wildfire that is spreading or it is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter, or control line.”

It is also suspected to be human-caused. The Government of British Columbia notes that 42% of wildfires are the result of human activity– whether that is intentional or accidental– from a 10-year average from 2012 to 2022.

There are currently no evacuation orders for the surrounding area, nor restrictions.

To stay updated, you can check the BCWS website. The last update is from July 3 at 9:28am PDT.
