Just in time for Father’s Day, I have personally tasted and selected three Canadian Whiskies that your Dad is sure to love:

For a Dad that is strong to his roots:

whisky-1via Forty Creek Whisky

Forty Creek Confederation Oak Reserve is a truly Canadian whisky down to its roots. As per its name, this uniquely historical spirit has been aged in Canadian oak barrels, harvested from trees that first rooted themselves in Canadian soil 150 years ago during the Confederation. Moreover, the reserve was produced with the traditional Forty Creek “Meritage” process in which corn, rye, and barley spirits are all aged separately before being blended together. The blend is re-barreled then comes back together for a period of marrying prior to bottling.

Tasting notes: A rich, full bodied whisky with lots to offer.  On the nose it offers aromas of banana, butter cream, nuts, marzipan, citrus and spice. Palate is soft, round and dry with vanilla, dark fruits, nuts and pepper spice notes, all wrapped up in oak. A perfect whisky to sip on.

For a Dad who loves the great outdoors:

whisky

Canadian Rockies 21 years old whisky named after an iconic landscape – the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It is one of the oldest expressions of Canadian whisky in Canada. This whisky was distilled using fresh glacier water, giving the whisky a unique character, and making it true expression of our Home and Native Land. Made from corn and rye mash bill and matured in ex-bourbon American white oak barrels.

Tasting notes: Incredibly complex, sweet oak caramels, exotic fruit salad and white pepper spiciness on the nose translates into a perfectly balanced, creamy palate. Ideal whisky to enjoy neat, on the rocks or mix it in an Old Fashioned cocktail.

For a Dad that likes kicking it on the porch:

whisky-canadianvia Curt / All Things Whisky

Alberta Premium is well known for producing 100% rye grain whiskies, which are both amazing and affordable. Dark Horse is a blend of 12-year-old rye whisky and 6-year-old small pot rye whisky, has 8% of well-aged corn whisky added to flesh out the body and a splash (0.5-1%) of sherry. All that and the fact that this whisky is aged in heavily charred American white oak barrels add up to a much richer flavor profile than the standard Alberta Premium release.

Tasting Notes: Classic rye pallet: rich, robust, loads of spicy and peppery notes. On the nose it offers strong clove, vanilla, toffee notes, that lead to a weighty pallet with rich dark fruits, oak tannins and familiar rye bitterness. Very powerful whisky that can be enjoyed on its own or tamed by mixing it with soda.
