During the 2014 NHL Draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected Jake Virtanen. GM Jim Benning stated Virtanen has a mean and physical game which is exactly what the Vancouver Canucks need for competing in the Pacific Division.

Unlike when Mike Gillis made moves, Canucks fans embraced Benning’s decision on selecting Virtanen and believe he’s a great young talent with a lot of potential.

Here’s a quick list on 10 things you need to know about Jake Virtanen

1. He’s only 17 years old. He was born August 17, 1996.

2. Jake Virtanen is a local boy. He was born in New Westminster and grew up near Abbotsford where he played minor Hockey.

3. He attended Yale Secondary School from grade 8 – 12.

4. In 2011, the Calgary Hitmen selected him with the first overall pick at the WHL Bantam Draft.

5. He plays left wing but shoots right.

6. He was apart of the Under-18 Canadian natioanl team that beat the United States 4-0 to win gold.

7. He knows how to score. As a member of the Abbotsford Hawks, Jake scored 68 goals in 59 games. In Calgary, 45 goals and added 26 points to finish the short season with 71 points. He was also tied for team lead in scoring for Canada during the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championships.

8. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked Virtanen as the sixth best North American skater for the 2014 draft

9. At the stage of 17, Jake Virtanen stands 6’1 tall and weights in at 208lbs.

10. Before the draft, he stated “if things fall into place and I get drafted by Vancouver, that would be a dream come true for me”
