The new regulation hopes to prevent injuries and help save lives.

Minister of Transport Marc Garneau says the addition of rear-view cameras and displays will be standard equipment on all new vehicles in Canada, including base models. “This helps children be seen and provides Canadians with one of the best safety technology systems to reduce back-over collisions,” he adds.

From the years 2004 to 2009, there were approximately 1,500 injuries and 27 deaths due to back-over crashes in Canada.
