Operation Red Nose is an annual December campaign against impaired driving in the 604. It provides a free (donations welcome), volunteer-run designated driver service which caters to all motorists who have been drinking and are not fit to drive their own vehicle home.
The program provides patrons a safe, confidential ride in their own vehicle without getting behind the wheel themselves. Volunteer teams are made up of an escort driver, designated driver, and navigator. All volunteers undergo police background checks and are insured for liability.
The Operation Red Nose 2014 service will be offered in:
- Abbotsford‐Mission
- Burnaby
- Chilliwack
- Delta‐Richmond
- Langley‐Surrey
- New Westminster
- North Shore
- Ridge‐Meadows, Tri Cities
* Operation Red Nose will not be offered in Vancouver.
How Operation Red Nose works
Just call 604-943-0460 and a team of three volunteers will help you get home safely. One volunteer drives the client’s vehicle, a second volunteer navigates; a third follows in an escort vehicle to pick up the two volunteers once they drop off the client.
Donations to Operation Red Nose are gratefully accepted and help fund local youth sports, and other not-for-profit organizations. In 2013, 4,400 volunteer drivers provided nearly 8,000 rides home within British Columbia.
Operation Red Nose will operate every weekend of December until the 20th. It will also operate on New Years Eve from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.
