A recall has just been issued for a brand of baby formula sold online and in Costco Canada due to the presence of a toxin. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently conducting a food safety investigation, as well as verifying that industry is removing recalled products from the marketplace.
Baby Formula Recall In Canada
The recall concerns Kendamil brand Infant formula. According to the notice, the product is sold only at Costco Wholesale, Canada.
“The affected product is being recalled from the marketplace due to cereulide toxin,” notes the CFIA. “Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is highly heat stable meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking or when preparing infant formula for consumption.”
Symptoms generally begin quickly after ingestion. Most involve gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea and vomiting.
The CFIA is advising consumers to not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute the recalled products. Instead, they should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased. Those who have been affected by consuming the recalled product should contact their healthcare provider.
There have been no reported illness associated with consumption of the product.
