The 1600 Pandas+ World Tour has arrived in Burnaby, with an absolutely adorable display.
888 papier-mâché pandas is an art installation created by French artist Paulo Grangeon; it makes its first North American appearance at Metropolis at Metrotown from July 10th until August 8th. You can find photos of the installation here.
Specifically, the event focuses on pandas and sustainability. When the exhibit first launched in 2008, there were approximately 1600 black-and-white bruins in the wild. As such, the artist handcrafted 1,600 papier-mâché pandas from recycled materials. Now, over there are over 1800 giant wild pandas, which represents a 17% increase in the past decade.
Created to raise awareness of wildlife conservation, all of the exhibit proceeds will be donated to Canada WWF.
1600 Pandas+ At the Metropolis At Metrotown
Visitors may observe the exhibit in the Grand Court. And, for the special opening on July 10, the artist will be on hand. Later that evening, an opening celebration will also take place at 7 PM.
During the course of the exhibition, guests may enjoy a selfie station, contests including a chance to win a trip for four to see the pandas at the Calgary Zoo, and panda adoption.
Furthermore, visitors who would like to adopt a papier-mâché panda can pre-register at the exhibit by donating to WWF Canada and will be able to pick up their panda after the exhibit concludes; however, Panda adoption is only available in person.
Visitors can share their experience through posts, photos, and videos using the hashtag #1600PandasPlusCA for a chance to win a weekly panda prize pack which includes panda swag as well as a $50 Metropolis gift card.
Paulo Grangeon is an enthusiastic, internationally acclaimed French sculptor with international acclaim. In addition, he’s crafted more than ten thousand papier-mâché pandas in Thailand.
