The Museum of Surrey’s newest free exhibit is showcasing exactly that, highlighting the integral part hockey has played in Canada’s past and present. Excitingly, it also shines a light on Surrey’s local hockey heroes, as well as having plenty of interactive activities that will get the whole family hooting and hollering for a goal.
Celebrating Canada’s Game
Our Connection to Hockey explores how Canada’s deep ties to the sport has brought together individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole. From its humble beginnings in backyard ice rinks to international games, hockey’s legacy stretches far into Canada’s past and well into its future.
Visitors will have the chance to learn all about how hockey is part of the glue that keeps Canada together. Alongside the national icons on showcase, Surrey’s own athletes and game-changers will be under the same spotlight, as well as the untold stories of diversity in hockey. Women’s hockey, para hockey, and Punjabi broadcasters have all played some amazing parts in making the sport what it is today– especially locally.
Here, you can admire jerseys, examine historical hockey gear, and check out all the amazing artefacts from Canada’s favourite sport.
On The Rink
Alongside learning about hockey’s history, visitors will also be able to take part in plenty of interactive fun. Whether you’re taking a slap-shot, sitting in a sled, or are playing bubble hockey, these hands-on activities will get the whole family in on the sport. Add in the immersion of the sights and sounds of being in the middle of a game and you’ve got one very dynamic exhibit.
Being family-friendly, Our Connection to Hockey is a fantastic way to introduce it to kids who want to discover the game. It’s also a great exhibit for lifelong enthusiasts, and hockey fans of all ages, as you’ll have the chance to share your own stories from the rink at the “My Story” zone! Reflect on your love for the sport and bring that passion to the exhibit. You might even inspire some folks to pick up the stick!
