Japan Travel Advisory: Typhoon Champi

According to The Weather Network, Super Typhoon Champi is the most powerful storm on Earth this year so far. It has achieved peak winds of 296 km/h, the same as a Category 5 storm.

It is expected to hit Japan’s Ryukyu Islands, which are a chain of islands that stretch from Kyushu to Taiwan. They are divided into the Kagoshima Prefecture and Okinawa Prefecture.

“The storm is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds. It may cause flash flooding and landslides and could severely disrupt… essential services,” the federal government notes. The following services could be affected:

  • transportation
  • power distribution
  • water and food supply
  • telecommunications networks
  • emergency services
  • medical care

Typhoon Champi will likely sweep through the Ryukyu Islands on October 22, 2026. Travellers are asked to exercise caution if they are in the affected area, monitor local news and weather, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Last month, Japan’s Ryukyu Islands were also hit by Tropical Storm Surigae, which brought similarly dangerous conditions to the area.
