Will Vancouver Get It’s Own NBA Team?

The topic of Vancouver getting its own NBA team, has been a hot topic for several years. It is unknown whether the re-birth of the NBA will occur in our city after we last said goodbye to the Vancouver Grizzlies in 2001. Why all this discussion of an NBA team of our own? Well the financially challenged Sacramento Kings are potentially looking for a new city to call home after a deal to rebuild their arena in Sacramento failed due to insufficient funds.

Many are saying that Vancouver is the “most viable” destination to home an NBA team. Vancouver already has an arena, Rogers Arena, which is quipped to be able to perform as a basketball arena as well. Rogers Arena owner Francesco Aquillini stated that Vancouver doesn’t have any plans to house an NBA team, however the future of NBA in Vancouver is definitely probable.

According to Aquillini it all depends on our market. Is there enough fan base and market support to host an NBA team? Lack of this was the reason why the Grizzlies left Vancouver in the first place. Owners of the Sacramento Kings, the Maloof brothers, claim that they don’t plan on selling their team, and if they do happen to relocate to Vancouver, they would be tenants in Rogers Arena, thus making them compete for market dollars with the Canucks.

What do you think? Would you like to see Vancity have it’s own NBA team again?
