If you’re paying more for your baggage on WestJet, it’s not a mistake. The company has changed their baggage fees policy and people aren’t too happy about it.
“Please note, fees are generally charged in the currency of the reservation, however, in some cases they may also be charged in the currency of the country you’re travelling to or from,” states the website.
WestJet Baggage Fees
As of August 28th, 2018, the company noted, “your baggage fee will depend on the country you depart from,” and people are reacting:
I went through the entire @itravel2000 booking process again & no where it mentions abt the baggage fees. Its probably hidden at the bottom of the terms and conditions page. Since you are charging us extra why not let us know before hand about it next to the price of the package? pic.twitter.com/ZDYhP0QPfy

Yes I was upset also …I feel it is a trap. Once at your destination (Mexico) you’re forced to pay in US dollars. No mention of that when you book your trip and pay baggage fees in Canada …I cry foul…

.@WestJet this is a total price grab. It’s frustrating that baggage prices have increased again -but to now charge in US$ for bags in countries that aren’t the US is unfair. As a Canadian airline why not be transparent and charge in our currency? @AirPassRightsCA #westjet https://t.co/ezkKD9ZI3R

Some people are urging passengers to do their homework before they book any flights:
Once your out of Canada its US dollars. It’s under their baggage policy. When the couple walked up to check in, Westjet didn’t decide at that moment to charge them American dollars. Do your homework before you travel people.

Others are ready to give up on the company:
@WestJet In reading some of the recent articles about baggage fees in US dollars and the increase charge for animals being transported. I feel you are no longer “ better then the rest”. Just another money grabbing airline. Might have to give up my Westjet Card.
