Vancouver To Provide Creative Space For Low-Income Artists

Vancouver-based professional artists are invited to apply for the City of Vancouver Artist Studio Awards Program. The program helps artists develop their creative practices with the use of work-only or live-work space for reduced rent or for free, for up to three years.

Seven studio spaces will be awarded to artists who demonstrate artistic excellence and financial need for tenures between 2015 and 2018.

Artists must live in Vancouver and can work in a range of creative disciplines, including visual arts, dance, literary arts, theatre, and media arts.

About the studios
One live-work studio and one work-only studio will be awarded rent-free. Four live-work studios and one work-only studio will be available at rents between $300 – 470 per month.

The studios will be offered for two- or three year leases, depending on the space. The live-work studios allow a maximum of two people, including children. One of the live-work studios is a one-bedroom unit and priority will be given to an artist with a child. The studios are located in different areas of Vancouver.

Applicants: view the studios on August 16, apply by September 5
There will be open houses at the artist studios for applicants on August 16, 1:00pm – 4:00pm.
The deadline for applications is September 5, 2014.

How the artists will be chosen
The artists will be chosen by an independent jury of peers through an open, competitive process. Applicants will be pre-qualified by the City’s Housing Centre based on financial need, and then reviewed by the jury for artistic merit.

The recipients will be announced in December 2014.

About the Artist Studio Awards Program
Since 1995, the City has offered the Artist Studio Awards Program to support local, emerging, low-income artists during critical periods of their careers by providing secure, affordable work space for a significant period of time.

The program is one of the ways we support our talented arts community and further our goals to invest in the creative economy, address affordable cultural spaces, and recognize the important role artists play in our city.
