Downtown Vancouver is one step closer towards a futuristic twisting tower.
In a recent meeting, the city unanimously approved re-zoning for the controversial, yet intriguing tower next to the Granville Bridge ramp at Pacific and Howe streets.
The building, designed by Bjarke Ingels will cost $200 million to build, rise 52-storeys and provide 500 units to house roughly 850 people. There will also be commercial space available on the lower levels.
Much like the Qube, the twisting tower is in a triangular shape on ground level, and twists its way into a rectangle as it goes higher.
Many, who oppose the tower argue that it will block views of the water (for some), bring too much density to the area (it’s Granville, c’mon) and cast shadows (really?). On the flip side of the coin, many have defended the project and state it will bring new elegance to the neighborhood.
Alongside the project, West Bank will provide $4 million in community contributions.
Other specs:
- 497 feet tall (making it the 5th tallest highrise in Vancouver)
- 650,000 square feet
- 609 vehicle parking stalls and 723 bycycle stalls
