Vancouver Couple Makes Extraordinary Legacy Donations

Vancouver and Mayne Island residents Fred and Bette Cotton left behind a pair of legacy donations that will surely make an impact.

The first, announced last month by the Mayne Island Parks and Recreation Commission (MIPRC), is a donation of land to Mayne Island Parks. The second is a gift donation of $500,000 to Rotary International to eradicate polio.

Eight acres of waterfront land which have been in the family since the 1950’s will be renamed the Fred & Bette Cotton Community Park. The donation of property also includes cash to cover some of the expenses in repurposing some of the land some of which is already lawns and flowerbeds. Upgrades like an entrance, driveway and washrooms is scheduled to be complete by June 2016 in time for summer. The residence on the property will be re-purposed into a multi-purpose venue.

Another donation gift will be matched by the Canadian government and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to total $2.5 million towards the Rotary International campaign to eradicate the polio disease.
