Disney has decided to shelve the third installment of popular sci-fi franchise Tron 3 due to Tomorrowland “bombing” at the box office, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Although the project was never officially greenlit, multiple sources close to the project revealed prep work had begun and production was planned to begin later this fall in Vancouver.
Joseph Kosinski, the director of 2010’s Tron: Legacy, was signed on to lead Tron 3, with co-stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde set to reprise their roles.
Disney’s plans to currently scrap Tron 3 come as shock as Tron: Legacy was a massive success and grossed the studio $400 million worldwide (produced for $170 million).
