The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain Is Delayed & Here’s When It’ll Be Ready

The Surrey-Langley skytrain extension project is still very much a go. However, it was previously estimated to be completed in 2025 and that is no longer the case.

The project will take a bit longer. In fact, three years longer before it sees completion.

The opening of the 16-km-long Surrey to Langley extension project on the Expo line goes along Fraser Highway from King George Station in Surrey City Centre to Langley Centre. It is now expected in 2028

The Delay

The TransLink board of directors had a public meeting in early September where the extension timeline was discussed.

The timeline of 2025 completion was dependent on receiving $1.6 billion to start the first 7km of the project. Unfortunately, the original funding was cancelled and hence the delay. In July 2021, federal funding was announced for the project, however that has yet to be formalized. To meet the 2025 deadline, the funding needed to be reached by a specific date.

The increased cost of construction, due to the multiple cars and length of the project, is also a big factor in the delay. Expo and Millennium lines will grow to a combined fleet size of 427 cars, including 30 additional cars to serve the Surrey-Langley Extension. This involves much more time-intensive steps including the procurement of the materials and cars.

Looking Ahead

Regardless of the timeline extension, the project is still very much wanted.

The Surrey-Langley Extension will add eight new stations, allows for  6,800 passengers per hour per direction, room for growth and will accommodate 10 times more than the existing bus services along the Fraser Highway.

This new segment of the Expo Line is expected to have a travel time of about 22 minutes.
