The NHL has officially approved their 32nd team following a unanimous vote from the board of governors on Tuesday morning.

The franchise expansion will bring a new team to Seattle, who will play in the renovated KeyArena – about a 2.5 hour drive from Vancouver.

According to the NHL, the team will make their debut in the 2021-22 season.

Seattle initially submitted its application in February, and has reportedly secured over $30,000 in deposits for season tickets.

The ownership group, led by Jerry Bruckheimer, Tod Leiweke, and David Bonderman as majority stakeholders will pay a $650-million US expansion fee.

The addition of the Seattle franchise brings the Western Conference to 16 teams, which finally matches the number of teams in the Eastern Conference.
