Canada Day may have ended on a tragic note for one small marine mammal in Campbell River; however, a charter boat provided a terrified seal with refuge from two apex predators.

Indeed, a video posted to Instagram by Pacific Yellowfin Charters shows the creature hiding behind a motor as two orcas hover around the boat. The animal appears to cower behind it as it eyeballs the large whales, with no intention of hopping back in the water.

Global News reached out to whale and bear watching guide Nick Templeman, who described the encounter. He reports that the pod consisted of a mother and four children, and that they chased the seal onto the boat.

The shaking seal stayed put for a full half hour before braving the water. It eventually hopped in the ocean, but returned to the boat shortly after.

The charter boat saved the trembling critter by depositing it further up the Frederick Arm.
