SE Marine Drive and Knight To Finally Undergo Renovations

SE Marine Drive and Knight Street, currently Vancouver’s highest collision intersection will finally receive a long overdue renovation.

According to ICBC statistics, the intersection has been responsible for over 500 injury collisions between 2009 and 2013, with 80 per cent of those being a result of rear-end situations.

Majority of the collisions take place on the eastbound off-ramp which brings in traffic from Knight Street Bridge onto southeast Marine Drive.

The intersection has been dubbed the worst intersection in Vancouver, and the fourth worst in British Columbia.

The city has a proposed a handful of changes to increase safety and provide new access for trucks and other vehicles. This includes:

  • An additional vehicle lane on the Knight Street Bridge off-ramp connecting eastbound SE Marine Drive, combined with signalization of the off-ramp
  • A new westbound left-turn lane on SE Marine Drive connecting to the Knight Street northbound on-ramp
  • A reconfigured traffic signal
  • New shared pedestrian and bicycle paths on the Knight Street eastbound off-ramp and on the north side of SE Marine Drive.

Construction will begin and be complete within 2017.

In addition to the ideas proposed above, the city is also asking for public input on the intersection.
