Rogers Arena To Show Canucks Away Games

Rogers Arena could be opened to Vancouver Canucks fans when the team is on the road, officials said Monday.

Canucks Sports and Entertainment issued a statement saying the idea of opening the stadium to show away games has been discussed internally and various options are being considered.

“A formal announcement will be made if it is appropriate,” a spokesperson wrote.

Showing televised games at the arena is not a new concept in Vancouver. The doors opened to hockey fans for the Olympic gold medal game in 2002, drawing thousands of people to the venue.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has also been supportive of the idea.

“We’ve been in discussions with Rogers Arena about opening for away games and its got to work for them they’re crunching the numbers on that and seeing if they can open their doors,” he told CTV News.

There are other options for being part of the Canucks crowd.

Besides the outdoor gathering in downtown Vancouver, the Commodore Ballroom on Granville Street has also been showing the games.

Screens in city parks have also been discussed but the city is hoping sponsors will step up first..
