Richmond Family Looking For Donor To Save Son’s Life

A family in Richmond is urgently looking for mixed-race donors to step forward in hopes of finding a match that will helpsave their 6-year-old son’s life.

Lia Weekes was traveling in the Philippines with her family when her son Joshua got sick with what seemed to be a cold or flu virus.

However, when they arrived back in Canada and took him to the doctor—they realized it was much more than that.

Joshua was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia less than 24 hours after arriving back home. He started chemotherapy immediately and will need a bone marrow transplant within the next three months.

Physicians said finding a match for Joshua will be challenging because of his mixed ethnicity, and while the parents haven’t been ruled out as potential donors—they say an external match would be preferred.

Both parents are of mixed race—Weekes is of Filipino and British heritage while her husband has Caribbean and Icelandic in his background.

If you could be a potential match for Joshua, register as a donor at Canadian Blood Services.
