Who doesn’t love seeing cute rabbits hopping around the city? Well the Richmond Auto Mall and the City of Richmond wants the high population of approximately 400 homeless rabbits handled. The rabbits currently reside near the Richmond Auto Mall off of Westminster Highway towards the edge of the Richmond Nature Park.
The rabbits started appearing three years ago, and although children and parents shopping at the auto mall love to visit and feed them, the auto mall wants the animals removed and put into a more appropriate environment.
Rabitats Canada, an animal welfare group is hoping to raise $60,000 in hopes of opening a rabbit sanctuary in the Lower Mainland. The rabbits need to be moved into the sanctuary because once a pet rabbit is let loose, it is considered wildlife, and can’t technically be up for new household homes.
A few years ago, the University of Victoria had a similar problem, and Rabitats helped send hundreds of rabbits to different sanctuaries in the U.S.
