If you’re looking to spend some cash on something you don’t really need, look no further – square watermelons have returned to Vancouver.
The unique fruit has popped up on the shelves of Urban Fare stores with a price tag of $199.99.
Square watermelons are grown in Japan. The idea behind it is really simple and you can grow one here in Vancouver for a couple bucks. How? Once you have a small watermelon on it’s vine, you place a square tempered glass box around it. When the watermelon grows and gets bigger, it naturally assumes the shape of the box. Easy right?
In 2005, Urban Fare imported square watermelons to Vancouver and originally sold them for $99. The price has now increased by $100 and believe it or not they’re actually selling. Urban Fare has 4 locations in the 604: Yaletown, Coal Harbour, Shangri-La, and False Creek.
