Former Vancouver Canuck Pavol Demitra will be remembered this Monday, September 5th through a life-capturing documentary. The video will include Demitra’s early years, his journey in the NHL and ultimately, his tragic death.
Demitra signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks on July 10th, 2008.
In his first season with the team, he totalled 20 goals and 53 points in just 69 games.
After two years with the Canucks, Demitra joined the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (Kontinental Hockey League).
On September 7th 2011, the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) were involved in a plane crash that killed everyone on board – including Pavol Demitra
Aside from his NHL career, Demitra played at a stellar level internationally; he was even called up to play for Team Slovakia in the 2010 Winter Olympics while playing for the Canucks.
In the semi-finals versus Canada, Slovakia fell behind 3-0, but rallied back scoring two goals in the third.
Demitra almost scored with 9 seconds remaining in regulation, but his shot was stopped by Canucks’ teammate Roberto Luongo. The save was dubbed the “Glove from Above”.
