Your small four-legged friend will be able to roam leash-free with other dogs of the same size thanks to the City of New Westminster’s new summer pilot project.

For a temporary period, the city has decided to designate a portion of the dog park within Queen’s Park for strictly small dogs.

City officials have gone ahead and installed a temporary fence and signage within the existing park to separate the two areas.

Small dogs are welcome to roam on either side of the fence.

“We’ve had a lot of feedback from dog owners to provide designated off-leash areas for small dogs,” said Jay Young, Manager of Queen’s Park Arenex. “Because Queen’s Park is one of the largest off-leash dog areas and is centrally located in the city, we felt it would be an ideal testing ground for small dog owners to try out this summer.”

So how small does your dog have to be to qualify?

According to New West officials, dogs in the new off-leash area must be under 25 pounds.

The pilot project will run from now through September 2016. Depending on how the new area plays out, the City will decide how to proceed.

Throughout the process, dog owners are encouraged to provide feedback through an online survey found here.
