Metro Vancouver Windstorm

Over 100,000 people on BC’s South Coast woke up without power Thursday morning as a massive wind and rain storm travels through the region, knocking down trees, cancelling classes, and causing several disruptions along the way.

BC Hydro reports that over 90,000 customers are without power across metro Vancouver, and additional 9,000 on Vancouver Island following a windstorm warning that was issued on Wednesday evening.

In addition to trees falling on power lines, meteorologists have issued a warning to be watchful of flying tree branches.

According to BC Hydro spokeswoman Simi Heer, North Vancouver, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows, and Chilliwack are among the hardest hit areas at the moment. South Delta is also experiencing localized flooding, but crews reportedly have the situation under control.

Harbour Air Seaplane, and BC Ferries have also delayed and cancelled select routes this morning due to the high winds.
