You don’t need to travel far and wide to stumble across natural beauty, especially in British Columbia.
Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park is a must visit for outdoor enthusiasts, and it’s home to the magical and historical Othello Tunnels.
Whether you’ve been before or it’s your very first time—here are five reasons why you need to visit the incredible Othello Tunnels.
It’s only two hours away from Vancouver
Road trip, anyone? It’s a short drive out of the city but long enough to feel like you’re going somewhere off-the-grid. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and get back to nature at this majestic spot.
A short but scenic trail
The family-friendly trail is an easy 3.5-km route (round trip). But it’s long enough to stretch your legs after the drive and get some much-needed fresh air.
They’re kind of a big deal
Due to their rugged exterior, the tunnels have been featured in many films throughout the years. One of the most notable films they appeared in was Rambo First Blood. The tunnel was shown in an awesome cliff jumping scene.
Cool backdrop for photos
The series of old train tunnels and bridges cuts through granite walls and passes over the rushing waters of the Coquihalla River. There’s also boardwalks and waterfalls—making it a truly magical place to explore.
Filled with history
In the early 1900s, Canadian Pacific Railway created a route linking the Kootenay region with the BC coast by rail. The railway was built over three mountain ranges. In the Coquihalla Gorge, they cut a 300-foot-deep channel in granite. Then a line of tunnels was built going through it, which are now known as the Othello Tunnels as a result.
