Canucks Eliminated From Playoffs

To say the Vancouver Canucks are struggling to score goals would be an understatement right now.

For the 4th time in the past five games the Canucks were unable to register a goal, falling to the St. Louis Blues 4-0 Friday night on the road, and are officially out of the playoff race.

Heading into the offseason, forward depth, and prospect development are two key areas Canucks management must focus on improving if they hope for better results next year.

For the most part Brian Elliot had a relatively quiet night only needing to make 15 saves for St. Louis (44-22-9), who officially clinched a playoff spot with the win.

On the other side Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves for the Canucks (27-34-13), who currently sit well out of the playoff picture tied with the Edmonton Oilers for last in the conference.

Blues received goals from Kyle Brodziak (4th), Robby Fabbri (18th), Carl Gunnarsson (3rd), and Joel Edmundson (1st).

Brodziak scored his second shorthanded goal of the season to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. He started an odd-man rush with Scottie Upshall when he deflected a Linden Vey pass; Upshall broke out of the zone, carried down the left side and fed Brodziak in the crease for an easy redirection past Markstrom at 10:51 of the first period.

Fabbri’s 11th point (four goals, seven assists) in 11 games was his 18th goal and came after linemates Stastny and Brouwer made quick passes, with Stastny feeding Fabbri in the left circle. Fabbri beat Markstrom with a quick wrist shot at 15:25 for a 2-0 lead.

Gunnarsson scored his first goal since Feb. 20 on a slap shot from the point with Brouwer setting a screen in front of Markstrom at 15:32 of the second period to make it 3-0.

In the third rookie Joel Edmundson scored his 1st career NHL goal at 12:15 to make it 4-0 for the home side.

The Canucks have now lost seven straight games, and will try to assess their young guns with only a few games remaining in the season.

Up next: The Canucks travel to Chicago for a matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks with game time slated for 5:00pm.
