Three Hikers Have Lost Their Lives After Plunging Over B.C. Waterfall

UPDATE: As of September 7, the body of the final missing hiker has since been located a week after the hiking group fell over a waterfall. Efforts are currently underway to retrieve his body.

Two hikers lost their lives after they plunged over a B.C. waterfall on September 1. One other hiker also went over the waterfall and is missing, although she is presumed deceased.

Located near Kimberley, B.C., Meachen Creek Falls is a large waterfall that stands at 85 ft. tall. The Kimberley RCMP say they were alerted to a GPS SOS signal around the area, with a local search and rescue following the alert. Bighorn helicopters, a drone, and police dogs were dispatched to the scene.

A 68-year-old woman was found deceased about halfway down the waterfall. Another hiker, a 35-year-old woman, was also found deceased. Her body is currently being recovered.

The last hiker, a 35-year-old man, is still missing. RCMP have said that he is presumed dead, although searchers are continuing to recover his body.

In a statement, RCMP said, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.”

The hikers’ deaths are not believed to be suspicious.
