The iconic luxury hotel and heritage building, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, was first opened way back in 1939. It opened on the eve of the Royal visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and took over a decade to construct.
Known as the “Hotel Vancouver”, it remained the tallest building in Vancouver up until 1972.
It is conveniently located near the Vancouver Art Gallery and Vancouver City Centre Station. Not only has it offered comfort and elegance to its guests but it makes a great filming location for film and television. It’s Italian revival architecture style and character has been featured in a number of films and TV shows.

Now a flagship Vancouver-filmed superhero comic fiction series, Arrow centers around Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow played by Toronto’s Stephen Amell. The show used the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in Season 3 Episode 23 “My Name Is Oliver Queen” as the hotel where Damian Darkh was staying. Multiple parts of the building were used including a room, a hallway and the roof.
The Suite Life of Zack and Cody
While the three seasons of Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody were filmed in a Hollywood studio, Vancouver loaned a famous landmark building to the show. The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver doubled as the exterior of the swanky fictional Tipton Hotel in Boston. The show also had a spin-off series for another three seasons and a Disney TV movie.
The popular kids show starred twin brothers Cole and Dylan Sprouse, Brenda Song and Ashley Tisdale. Their breakout role was in the 1999 comedy Big Daddy with Adam Sandler. Cole plays Jughead Jones on the super hit teen drama Riverdale series on CW which films in Vancouver.

Paranormal science-fiction series Fringe used the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver’s exterior as the hotel where Walter and son Peter stay in Season 1 Episode 2 “The Same Old Story”. Olivia visits them both there. Fringe ran for 5 seasons and 100 episodes; it starred Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and John Noble. While the pilot episode was filmed in Toronto and the remainder of the first season shot in New York City, seasons 2-5 were hosted by Vancouver.
Vancouver’s staple sci-fi mystery show The X-Files used the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in Season 1 Episode 12 “Fire” as Venable Plaza Hotel in Washington D.C.. As the title of the episode suggests, a fire breaks out in the hotel. The X-Files shot its first five seasons and its second TV movie in Vancouver while the next four seasons were shot in LA. Two new revival seasons have recently been filmed in Vancouver with Season 11 airing in 2018.

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver helped Portland come to life in two 50 Shades movies as The Heathman Hotel.. and we all know what goes on in there.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
The BBC America and Netflix co-production stars Samuel Barnett as Dirk Gently and Elijah Wood as Todd Brotzman. It used the exterior of Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in its very first episode Season 1 Episode 1 “Horizons” and again in Season 1 Episode 7 “Weaponized Soul” as the Perryman Grand hotel.
Jessica Alba’s breakout role as an escaped genetically modified super solider in Dark Angel was set in Seattle but filmed further north here in Vancouver. It used Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in Season 1 Episode 5 “Prodigy” as the Steinlitz Hotel where Max (played by Alba) investigates a conference.
She went on to film Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in Vancouver as well. She also filmed the 2007 movie Good Luck Chuck with Dane Cook in Vancouver. It notably used the Cecil Green Park House on the UBC grounds for wedding scenes.
