UPDATE: This event has been cancelled due to difficulties related to obtaining artisan work visas.

The PNE will once again shine bright with vibrant light displays this winter.

The Vancouver Chinese Lantern Festival will light up festival grounds with dozens of spectacular gossamer lanterns from Friday, February 1st – Sunday, March 31st, 2019.

The site will be illuminated in celebration of Chinese culture, featuring dozens of massive traditional artisan lanterns, amazing live performances, children’s activities and incredible food.

According to organizers, this year’s event will feature a new layout with new lantern displays and unique features. Here’s a peek at how the event looked last year.

This festival is the largest of its kind in Canada and last year’s event saw lanterns reach nearly 200 feet in length!

Festival Significance

Lantern festivals have been around for centuries. It started during the Han Dynasty, about 2,000 years ago.

Moreover, lanterns festivals have been lit on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Chinese calendar to pray for a good harvest.
