The most wonderful time of the year is upon us! Of course, we’re referring to Christmas in Metro Vancouver.

Various tree lighting events are scheduled to take place across the lower mainland, but not all ring in the holidays quite like the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival.

The city is extending a warm invite to residents and visitors to kick off their holiday season on Saturday November 24, between noon and 7 p.m. at Surrey’s Civic Plaza.

Leading up to the main event, guests can explore a holiday market featuring local vendors and crafters, take free photos with Santa, and decorate cookies along with a variety of other family- friendly attractions. In addition, you can get a bird’s eye view of the festival from the Ferris wheel, and treat the kids to amusement rides, inflatables, and road hockey competitions.

Once you’ve built up an appetite, indulge at the food trucks in The Holiday Fun Zone on University Drive.

If that’s not enough, attendees will also be treated to free children’s entertainers and live concerts. This year’s lineup includes Dawn Pemberton, award winning children’s performer and songwriter Jessie Farrell, and indie soul-pop band Lovecoast. Holiday choirs will perform on the Tree Riser Stage, Snowflake Stage and in the City Centre Library. The evening’s headline act will be performed by urban gospel and R&B singer Warren Dean Flandez on the Main Stage before and after the inaugural tree lighting.

The highlight of the day will of course be the Christmas tree lighting. The massive 60-foot tall tree will be adorned with huge holiday decorations, lights, and a star tree-topper.

If you can’t make the event, you can watch the Surrey Tree Lighting ceremony live on CTV at 6:30 p.m.

For those in the giving mood, the Surrey Food Bank, Surrey Christmas Bureau, Sophie’s Place and the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society will be on site collecting donations.
